Lent: First Sunday
First Sunday – How is Your Relationship With Your Guardian Angel?
During Lent, as we walk towards Easter – the event that saved humanity from certain destruction – it is good to resolve to understand at least one spiritual idea more fully. Let’s consider some ideas about Angels and other beings belonging to the Spiritual Hierarchy whose task it is to hold the Universe in balance.
Rudolf Steiner is very clear about how to approach this. “You must not just fantasize in general, as a mere nebulous mystic, about Angels, Archangels and Archai, and not reach beyond theories.” The Human Being and the Hierarchies, July 17, 1921
In this lecture, published in the book “Guardian Angels” Steiner stresses that we cannot take it for granted that our Guardian Angel accompanies us at all times. The reason is so simple. If we occupy our minds with materialistic ideas about world events instead of looking behind these events to try to work out what is actually happening, then our Angels can have nothing to do with us. To accompany us in this case would mean that the Angels deny their own realm and their affiliation to the Archangels, the Archai and the rest of the Spiritual Hierarchy.
To choose not to watch the news or not to engage in Information Technology is not the solution – that is the lazy option. As Steiner says, we need to “think thoughts that have their source in this world, and not thoughts that arise in isolation from it.” If we commit to seeking the spiritual foundation of every event in this world, our Guardian Angel will accompany us through each day, as well as during sleep, to assist us to make sense of world events. It is the openness of our seeking that signals to our Angel that we are up for the work.
